If love is a cake then I love a lot of people! In fact, I’m just on the right side of slutty- I’ll leave you to figure out which side is right. One of my favourite form of baking is birthday cake baking. Nothing gives you the warm and fuzzes like making something special for someone special on their special day.
I’m just spreading the love… And the calories!!
This weekend I made a a birthday cake for ‘ gorgeous George’, named thus by our CEO, a man in his forties. The girls in the office have been banned from calling him this.
George does not have a sweet tooth and it has become a bit of a mission for me to convert him. This is because someone’s lack of desire for chocolate is like a dagger to my heart and a completely foreign concept to me. I’ve decided to ease him in by picking a banana cake with passion fruit icing. Sweet but not too sweet with the acid in the icing minimal sugar used balancing things out.
So it was all going well. I followed the recipe, measured out my ingredients (for once) and patiently waited for the cake to cool before icing (again for once). Ok maybe I’m not being entirely honest- I may have decided to bake it in a round tin instead of a loaf and turn the icing syrup into a stiffer frosting but in my defense, whose ever heard of a loaf shaped, icing less birthday cake?
The result- sheer ugliness. This cake had to be the ugliest think I have ever baked, an assessment my boss concurred with when he enquired of the whole office the next day “where did we get such as ugly cake? It’s got to be the ugliest I’ve ever seen.”
None the less, it was very tasty- moist and perfectly balanced. The whole thing was polished off quick smart with the birthday boy eating two pieces – I think I may have a cake convert! See the final product below:
